As carbon content increases, steel becomes less ductile and more difficult to weld. When carbon goes over 0.25%, weldability drops notably. Fabrication thus becomes more challenging.
Shaping and machining also become more complicated due to increased hardness. But moderate carbon levels improve wear resistance. It’s a basic property in high-stress applications.
Excessive carbon, though, can lead to brittleness. The material may become more likely to crack under pressure.
Heat Treatment and Mechanical Optimization
Low-carbon steels (less than 0.20% carbon) do not respond well to heat treatment. Medium and high-carbon steels, though, can be strengthened through controlled heating and cooling techniques.
The ability to harden goes up as carbon content rises. These steels become suitable for applications that will need customized mechanical properties.
Selecting the Right Carbon Composition
The ideal carbon content depends on what the steel will be used for. Medium-carbon steels (within the 0.20-0.50% range) offer a balanced combination of strength, hardness, and ease of fabrication.
