There are countless people who have websites who have little idea as to what exactly goes into developing a website. Most of these people will not know how a website should function effectively and how the site can easily bring increased traffic and thus sales to their business. The Internet is strewn with substandard websites that look unprofessional. Such sites will ensure that those looking at them think that if a company website is poor, then the goods and services of that company will also be equally poor. The message that will be conveyed is that of a company who is not that concerned about its online image and therefore may not take its clients that seriously. Looking at the other extreme, there are websites that are far too flashy, with so much going on that the message that is to be conveyed is lost in all the imagery. The prime function of your company website is to convey a particular message to potential clients and customers. Some tips that will help to achieve this are:
Keep it simple – The creation of a simple site can be complex. The site needs to have a clear professional design, with the message that is to be conveyed about the company being instantly discernable. To this end, it is best to avoid animations, as they take time to load and may not even load in the browsers used by some people. They distract viewers of a website. Any calls to actions should be persuasive and obvious.
Avoid Broken Links – If viewers of a web page find that when they click on a link it does not work, not only does this appear to be unprofessional, but it is irritating and may well result in whoever is looking at your page leaving and looking at another site.
Easy Navigation – Overly elaborate and difficult to use menus are catastrophic. If your aim is to achieve business from your online presence, then it has to be made easy for visitors to navigate around your web pages. Menus that are too clever can easily put viewers off, not to mention the search engines! It is best not to use Flash based and JavaScript based menus. Such menus cannot be ready by search engines and therefore may adversely affect the ranking of your website.
Contact Forms – Companies will require site visitors to complete detailed forms concerning their requirements, so have forms that are easily found and simple to use. Make sure that the forms on your pages are working! People will find it frustrating if they spend some considerable time completing an online form and then encountering an error message when they submit it. A failed submission may well result in a failure in sales.
Contact Information – The whole idea of placing contact information on a site is because you require your potential customers to pick up a telephone and call you without more ado. Place addresses and phone numbers in easily detectable positions, preferably on all of the pages of the website.
Search Engine Friendly – A large portion of traffic will inevitably arrive via search engines, such as Google. The site will receive traffic when it shows on the initial pages of a search for relevant phrases and keywords. Remember, ranking is not achieved by accident, particularly when it comes to very competitive keywords. Web pages should have effective on page optimisation in place. The pages of a site need to be search engine friendly and every effort should be made within the design itself.
Browser Testing – Not all browsers will display websites in the same way, so make sure that your web pages perform in the same manner in all browsers.
Now you know some of the important aspects of website design, but the important thing to remember is to hire a professional designer. Try contacting an affordable website design agency, as they will not only be able to help you with cheap web design, but also give invaluable advice about what you can do to help yourself after your website has been launched.
