As far as being the best, and the worst, of whatever the world has to offer, the United States certainly has always fallen on both sides of that schism, yes? And it has all been for very good reason, too. With a country so large, there is room for all comers to take a stand. This is seen nowhere clearer than with arts entertainment in America.
The largeness of the country is a telling factor, in that everything from the place is seen as being huge. One great state alone, Texas, claims that everything is bigger there, and yet it is only one state of fifty neighbors. And when thinking of big and artistic, where is the home of the blockbuster film package deal? Hollywood, the trend setting capitol of the entire globe.
When you talk about Hollywood, you talk about big. Everything about the film industry is designed to be big, and is talked about in big terms. Stars are larger than life, hits are blockbusters, enormous earnings are bragged about every opening weekend, and screens are getting bigger every year, as are the theaters showing the films. The salaries are enormous, and the advertising income is even more so.
Television, too, produced in the same small city, is at once everywhere at the same time. The little screens with the big money are literally in almost every home now, on every continent. No place now are without the means of receiving TV signals, and regular viewing fare is reaching other cultures far removed form itself. For better or for worse, television guides cultural change all over the map now.
The third member of the mighty media triad is the music industry. Tied in so intimately with film and television, it too is an arbiter of cultural awareness and radical change. Never forget the impact that Elvis and The Beatles had in the States. Motown records, too, Detroit rock and roll, and west coast psychedelic became heard all over the world. And one of the greatest art forms in existence today, jazz music, is uniquely an American invention. From swing to hard bop, this is surely high art.
As for what is termed high art, or classical art, there are no shortages of places to discover veritable artistic treasures in the States. The larger metropolitan areas, most notable New York and Los Angeles, are homes to several world class museums. From the most avant-garde of modern artists to the staid and true works of the masters, the country is rich in tradition. As with music, many artists have a distinctly native feel to their work, and it is shown proudly.
Do not discount the ubiquitous car culture as artistic, either. New cars are celebrated in the USA and designers are more than welcome to trot out their wildest best. Cars in the country are customized and decorated with more artistic touches than you may have ever thought possible. While this hobby is not completely unique to this one country, chances are it all began here.
This country has certainly produced its share of unique means and ways for the whole wide world to consider. This is very clear in what has been achieved through arts entertainment in America. While sometimes of questionable taste, as all great art once was or may soon be, it is an undeniable cultural force.
