Tailoring Your Resume For Marketing and PR Jobs, Part 2

Scale and Category Matter: If you have spent more than one week in more than one type of marketing, public relations, or social media-focused agency, then you know that to say you work at a boutique PR and events firm is a completely different "account executive" job than to work at an experiential marketing firm as an AE.
Therefore, it's important to specifically state any and all experience (as an employee or as a vendor) with Razorfish vs. OMD, or within brand marketing vs. product marketing. If you have knowledge of it, spell it out, literally, or someone reading your resume might assume you don't know it.
The different types, focus, and scale of your past projects tells the hiring manager plenty about what you're likely to know backward and forward, what you probably have a handle on more or less, and what you've never come across.
Don't Forget Facts and Figures: All this keyword usage will get you nowhere if you are not able to creatively and clearly describe the scope of your work and your responsibilities, and the end results you brought to your employer.
What did you have to work with? When you arrived on the job or started your project, was there already a marketing budget and plan in place? Or did you plan marketing and sales budget, ROI tracking, and communications from scratch?
How did you make a difference? Percentages, totals, big wins absolutely belong on your marketing or PR resume.
How many followers did you gain and keep on Twitter? How many "Likes" did that article you shared get on Facebook? What quantifiable new business can you track back to your decision to contract with an affiliate marketing ASP?
In marketing, social media, and PR, the first thing you learn is that the message is key.
That being the case, if you are writing a resume for any of these spaces, consistently reviewing what message you're getting across should be easy enough to remember. Take it a step up and don't just remember, but execute on that order, and you'll have a marketing, PR, or social media resume tailor made for the top firms to come to you.
